Project Manager - Mt Piper BESS

About the role

 

Reporting to our Project Director, this leadership role will see you supporting the delivery of our utility-scale BESS project in NSW.

Located adjacent to our Mt Piper Power Station, just west of Lithgow NSW, you will drive the project from early works and Final Investment Decision (FID) through to on‑site construction and commissioning.

 

Please note: This is not intended to be on site based , but regular travel to the project site will be an expectation of the successful incumbent.

 

As Senior Project Manager – BESS, you will have the following responsivities:

 

  • Deliver the Mt Piper BESS Project in line with approved budgets (capex ~$300M), technical specifications, schedules, and governance standards.
  • Build and lead a high‑performing onsite project delivery team (direct and indirect reports).
  • Lead the safe, compliant, and high‑quality delivery of utility‑scale BESS projects, with a strong onsite presence.
  • Support the Project Director through early contractor works, readiness for FID, and execution planning.
  • Manage construction delivery across BESS supplier, Balance of Plant (BOP) and brownfield interface contractors.
  • Manage the grid connection delivery, including TNSP works, AEMO registrations and EnergyAustralia‑led activities.
  • Act as a visible HSSE leader, driving strong contractor safety performance and behaviours.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with contractors, suppliers, and delivery partners.
  • Providing clear, transparent reporting to the Project Steering Committee , senior leadership and to the Commonwealth as per the CISA agreement.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or equivalent), coupled with relevant experience to utility‑scale energy projects.
  • Proven delivery experience on large‑scale BESS or power generation projects in Australia.
  • Strong technical understanding of utility‑scale battery systems, including grid‑forming and grid‑following configurations.
  • Demonstrated experience across design engineering, construction, and project management in the power generation industry.
  • Experience with managing the grid connections, including GPS, R0, R1 and R2 processes
  • Proven delivery under EPC or split contractor models, managing complex interfaces.
